Over the last decades, Latin America has witnessed several armed conflicts, authoritarian regimes and dictatorships that have left a great number of victims of serious human rights violations, war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by State agents or individuals acting with or without the authorization, support or acquiescence of public servants. For many years, those responsible for committing these crimes enjoyed a high level of impunity. Nevertheless, the institutions, policies, as well as informal agreements from different social strata and the international community have increasingly given way to the victims’ demands for justice.
